House by Year, Dallas, TX

Project Statement

In House By Year, I photographed one house for every year between 1900 and 1999. The grid is organized by years and decades. Decades go across the top and years go down the side. While I was making these images I was curious about the changes in the physical appearance of houses over time and shifts in how we thought about houses leading up to the 2008 housing crisis.

The upper left image is a house constructed in 1900 and the bottom right house was constructed in 1999. In photographing the houses from the early 1900s I would go house by house on a block and be able to photograph multiple years because of the relatively slow pace of construction. In the mid-1950s I would go street-by-street in each street would be about a year. By the time I got to the 1970s and 80s I would move from development to development to find each new year.
